Ethiopia’s PM Refutes Trump’s Nile Dam Funding Claims

(MENAFN) Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed directly countered assertions by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, declaring his nation received "a single penny" in foreign government financing for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

Addressing the House of Peoples' Representatives, Abiy emphasized the massive infrastructure undertaking was funded entirely through domestic resources, powered by years-long public donation drives across Ethiopia.

The hydroelectric facility, positioned on the Blue Nile adjacent to the Sudan frontier, stands as Africa's most ambitious power generation venture and remains a flashpoint with downstream nations Egypt and Sudan, both voicing alarm over potential disruption to water supplies.

Abiy additionally revealed Ethiopia is completing another substantial hydropower installation on the Omo River with 2,200 megawatts of installed capacity and projected yearly output reaching 6,460 gigawatt-hours.

During a White House appearance in late January, Trump questioned American involvement in dam financing—a contention Ethiopian authorities have consistently dismissed.

"I said, how did you let that happen? Why would we have done that? We financed it. This country -- what a terrible thing," Trump said during a press conference.

In correspondence to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Trump floated the prospect of revived diplomatic talks concerning the dam.

According to reports, the letter, which was also shared with regional leaders, offered to restart mediation efforts aimed at resolving long-running disputes over Nile water sharing.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam dispute has persisted for over a decade, with Cairo and Khartoum demanding binding agreements on water release schedules before Addis Ababa proceeds with full reservoir operations. Ethiopia maintains the project is vital for electrifying its population and driving economic development, while rejecting claims it will significantly diminish downstream water access.
