Refugee Numbers in Jordan Decline Slightly

(MENAFN) The number of registered refugees and asylum seekers in Jordan decreased to 419,950 by the end of March, down from 426,931 in February, reflecting a 1.64 per cent drop, according to figures released by the UN refugee agency.

Data indicate that the majority of refugees—336,912 individuals, or 80.2 per cent—live in urban areas, while 83,038 people, representing 19.8 per cent, reside in camps, as stated by reports.

In terms of age distribution, young adults between 18 and 35 form the largest group, with 116,931 individuals (27.8 per cent). Children aged 5 to 11 follow at 90,244 (21.5 per cent), while those aged 36 to 59 total 78,468 (18.7 per cent). Children under five account for 51,258 (12.2 per cent), and 17,502 individuals (4.2 per cent) are aged 60 and above.

Gender data show a relatively balanced distribution, with males numbering 195,399 (46.5 per cent) and females 207,049 (49.3 per cent), while older persons represent a small share of the total.

Syrian nationals make up the vast majority of the refugee population at 396,640 (94.4 per cent). Iraqis account for 12,242 (2.9 per cent), followed by Yemenis at 6,105 (1.5 per cent) and Sudanese at 4,249 (1 per cent), with smaller numbers from other countries.

The figures also reveal that 101,002 refugees (24.1 per cent) are in need of specific protection or assistance. Among them, 58,775 individuals suffer from serious health conditions, while 42,937 live with disabilities, in addition to other vulnerable groups such as children, women, and the elderly.

Historically, refugee arrivals reached their highest level in 2013, when over 110,000 individuals were registered. In contrast, recent years have seen a sharp decline, with only 62 new arrivals recorded in 2025 and just seven in the first three months of 2026.

Geographically, the largest concentration of refugees is in Amman, hosting 144,010 individuals (34.3 per cent), followed by Irbid with 70,361 (16.8 per cent) and Mafraq with 52,230 (12.4 per cent). Major camps also continue to host significant populations, including Zaatari with 49,466 residents and Azraq with 33,419.
