Iraq to Call in US Envoy Over Fatal Habbaniyah Airstrike

(MENAFN) Iraq announced Wednesday it would summon the American chargé d'affaires in Baghdad in response to a lethal airstrike on the Habbaniyah base that left seven soldiers dead and 13 others wounded.

A formal statement released by the office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed the envoy would be presented with a strongly worded protest note outlining "Iraq's firm and unwavering position on preserving Iraqi sovereignty and condemns the irresponsible actions that amount to a heinous crime."

Baghdad made clear it would not absorb the strike without consequence, asserting its right to respond through all means sanctioned under the United Nations Charter. Authorities refused to rule out further action, denouncing the assault as a "fully fledged crime" in direct breach of international law.

Officials additionally cautioned that the strike risks compounding instability across an already volatile region while inflicting lasting damage on Iraqi-American bilateral relations.

In a significant diplomatic escalation, the government announced it would file a formally documented complaint with the UN Security Council and relevant international bodies over the incident.

The strike comes amid a broader regional conflagration. The United States and Israel have sustained an aerial campaign against Iran since February 28, a campaign that has claimed more than 1,340 lives, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran has unleashed waves of drone and missile attacks on Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting US military forces — triggering casualties, widespread infrastructure damage, and mounting disruption to global markets and international aviation.
